The Estepona Town Hall and the Municipal Chess School are organizing the thirty-seventh edition of the night tournament of this sport, which will take place on August 10 on the seafront (next to the Post Office). This is a regular activity in the town’s summer programming, being the only competition for amateur participants of these characteristics that is held in Spain.
The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, has highlighted that Estepona claims to be a benchmark for the practice of chess and has influenced the promotion that the City Council has given to this discipline, aware of the benefits it entails. In this sense, he has highlighted the actions carried out to promote its practice among citizens and its presence in the day-to-day life of the city.
The games, which will be played throughout the night, will bring together players between the ages of 6 and 90. The number of registered, a total of 250, is the highest to date.
In recent years, the Estepona City Night Club has brought together local participants and members of the municipal school, as well as bringing together a good number of players from various parts of Andalusia and Spain. The amateur nature of this event has made it a must for fans of this discipline.
This edition will be held, as in previous years, following the Swiss competition system. It will have twelve professional referees and a total of twenty-six trophies to be distributed among the different categories, as well as commemorative medals.
The activity is part of the l Municipal Chess Promotion Plan, which was launched in mid-2011 as a pioneering educational experience in the country, enabling all students born after 2004 to receive training to learn to play. to chess, a game that offers important intellectual benefits to those who play it.
This modality exercises and improves memory, concentration, creativity and logic and even helps them solve problems and improve reading comprehension.
Estepona is a city committed to chess. Proof of this is that another of the actions carried out to promote it was the construction of six giant boards on the Paseo Marítimo.
Each of these structures has an area of 20 square meters and pieces made of pressed plastic with a length of 55 centimeters. All these boards are available to the public so that they can enjoy games outdoors and in front of the sea.
Throughout the summer, the Municipal Chess School will hold rapid games of chess and giant games on the large-format boards on the Paseo Marítimo. As in past years, the activity “Chess for everyone” is free and open to all who wish, and will take place from July 3 to August 25, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. , under the supervision of the EMAE professor, Miguel Abril.
